Building Communication Where it Matters Most
Our Approach to Therapy
At Highland Horizon Therapy, we weave speech therapy into play, mealtimes, book reading, bath time, and other routines that make up your child’s regular day! By working with your child in their “real world”, using the toys, books, and activities they already have at home or daycare, we build meaningful communication skills that make a big difference in daily life.
Parent coaching and home practice are a key part of our approach. At the end of each visit, we’ll choose a simple strategy together for you to practice during the week, or we’ll provide materials such as word lists or flashcards to keep the progress going between sessions. You’ll feel supported every step of the way!
Taking the First Step
Our Evaluation Process
Speech and language evaluations help us understand your child’s communication strengths and needs. Your input will be important to help us understand how your child communicates throughout the day!
Before your first appointment, you will provide some information about your child’s development and medical history. During the evaluation, we’ll ask you a series of questions about your child’s communication and observe how they interact, play, and respond.
Based on the results of your child’s evaluation, we’ll make recommendations, discuss meaningful therapy goals, and send a report to your child’s doctor and insurance when needed. Speech therapy typically begins about three to four weeks later, if insurance is involved.
Our Specialties
Early Intervention (Ages 0-3)
Early intervention supports late talkers and young children who are learning to understand language. Our sessions use play and daily routines to teach the building blocks of communication, including gestures, sounds, signs, and words. Speech therapy will help your child:
Point, make choices, and imitate sounds
Express their needs, wants, and ideas
Reduce frustration and tantrums
Connect with family members and other children
Augmentative and Alternative Communication
AAC therapy supports children who benefit from extra tools to help them communicate. Your child may learn to use pictures, symbols, or tablets to express ideas without speech. By giving your child more ways to connect and participate, our AAC therapy sessions will help them:
Share their thoughts and needs
Feel understood and less frustrated
Socialize with others
Gain independence
Speech Therapy
Speech therapy helps children produce sounds and words accurately so others can understand them. During sessions, we use games, flashcards, and engaging activities to practice the specific sounds that your child finds challenging. Articulation and phonology therapy will help your child:
Speak more clearly
Make all age-appropriate speech sounds
Feel confident about their communication skills
Gain independence
